Susan Jane Smith

January 15, 1942 - November 2, 2011

Susan Jane Smith's Story:

There is no end, there is no beginning. There is only the infinite passion of life. Susan Jean Smith had such a passion, and lived each day to the fullest. Competitive, feisty, and independent, Susan worked hard all her life to care for those she held so dear, never looking for anything in return.

It was in the small community of Martin, Michigan, on January 15, 1942, that a new family began with the birth of a little girl named Susan Jean.

Susan grew up in the Martin area, with her parents and younger siblings. Joe, an older brother, was raised by his maternal grandmother. After Susan came Jan, Marcey, Carrie, Caleb, Jill, Edward and Jolene. Susans's father, Tim Goodhart worked very hard to support his family. He held many jobs, ranging from laboring in the wood working factories of West Michigan to driving bus. Her mother, Mary was busy as a mother and homemaker.

Susan attended Martin High School where she dated a young man named Gene Smith. However, Susan quit school in the 10th grade and moved to Ohio to live with her aunt and uncle. Martin, and perhaps thoughts of Gene, soon called her back. They were married on April 8, 1950 in South Haven, Michigan.

Gene was in the service and Susan found herself setting up housekeeping in many different areas. In 1956, the young couple was living in Pennsylvania, and it was here that Susan and Gene welcomed a boy they named James into their life. Subsequent moves took them to Bedford, Indiana and finally, in early 1961, they settled in Warsaw, Indiana. In late 1961, Susan gave birth to her daughter, Sheri, and Warsaw became the families' permanent home.

Susan loved to look for treasures at garage sales, and the sunnier the day, the better. She loved being outside, and always had a tan. A cold bottle of Pepsi kept her cool, but when Pepsi stopped using the 16 ounce glass bottles, Susan's favorite, she considered it a personal conspiracy. She swore the soda never tasted the same again.

In the mid 1960's, Susan and Gene were divorced, leaving Susan on her own to care for her family. However, in the late 1960's she met and eventually married Bob Smith. Susan not only gained a new husband, but welcomed Bob's children as well. Alice, Mildred and Melissa were loved as much as Susan's other children. Sadly, Susan and Bob divorced in the late 1970's. With a family to support and care for, Susan had worked outside the home most of her life.

Susan left her family with many wonderful memories.

Susan Jean Smith of Martin, 74, died peacefully on November 2, 2011 at Spectrum Health-Butterworth.
